Virat Kohli, team India skipper, has often given tough competition to the legendary Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting, with his leadership skills and aggressive approach. Now the captain can beat one of the ODI records made by the legendary cricketer while leading the Indian cricket team for the last ODI of the current 5-ODI series in Colombo versus Sri Lanka on Sunday, September 3.
Kohli needs another ton to equal his record of 30 ODI centuries and be the next for the most centuries in 50-over matches. The 28-year-old skipper went past Sanath Jayasurya’s record of 28 centuries in Sri Lanka by hitting 131 in 96 balls during 168-run win of India over SL in Colombo on August 31, on Thursday.
Finally, Kohli is the fastest cricketer to cross 29 ODI centuries within just 185 ODI innings. Sachin Tendulkar required 265 innings to reach 29 centuries. On the other side, Ponting played 330 innings to reach that figure.
Possibilities to Reach the Milestone for Kohli on Sunday Match
Actually, Kohli head started the series on bright side. He scored 82* so India could hit the total score of 217 runs easily in Dambulla. However, he faced the failures in 2nd and 3rd ODIs in Pallekele. He left the field for 4 and 3, respectively.
Nevertheless, the Delhi dasher came back with a bang in Colombo and had a head start just from the beginning of the innings on Thursday. He was furiously against the pacers in Sri Lanka, including Lasith Malinga. He did the foot work well to show the spinners who the boss is, as they troubled him in Pallekele.
After winning the toss, Kohli told how valuable the wicket was for batting. It seemed that he enjoyed his stay a lot in the middle. In Colombo, the R Premadasa stadium is supposed to provide yet another track that is good for batsmen and Indian skipper will be more excited to play against the Sri Lankan bowlers.
Kohli has reportedly hit four consecutive 100s for the team. On Thursday, he took a perfect revenge from Malinga and his team. Let’s hope for another century from him this Sunday.
