First week has finally come to an end since IPL 2018 started. We have witnessed some of the jaw-dropping moments with more twists and turns than a suspense thriller. No, it’s not about five-wicket hattrick or century! It’s about some of the most surprising performances by both batsmen and bowlers.
Though some of the big names performed really well as expected, but there are some unexpected players who took the tournament to another level. Here are some shocking performances to recap IPL’s first week.
- Mujeeb ur Rehman Throws Googly to break Virat Kohli’s stump
It was a poor start for Royal Challengers Bangalore to chase the runs against Kings XI Punjab. In second delivery, they lost a major wicket, Brendon McCullum. Skipper Virat Kohli and Quinton de Kock took RCB to 32/1 off 4 overs.
On the 5th over, here comes the 17-year-old Mujeeb ur Rehman who started with a dot and gave only 3 runs to Virat Kohli. On the third delivery, Kohli drove back of length to back. Next delivery was a bit wide but moved to middle stump. After two dots, he smashed his wicket with a googly. That over yielded only 1 run.
- KL Rahul’s fastest 51 against Delhi Daredevils
He was one of the most expensive players as Kings XI Punjab bought him for whopping 11 Crore. This year, he didn’t do much yet but he was supposed to do something in IPL. KXIP had a target of 166 runs to chase against Delhi Daredevils. But KL Rahul started on a very aggressive note. In the first three overs, Punjab scored 52 out of which Rahul scored 51 runs in just 14 balls. It was the fastest half-century in the history of IPL.
- Dwayne Bravo’s 68 stole the match in opener
Chennai Super Kings was in intense pressure as they had to chase 166 against Mumbai Indians in the opener. They were hovering around 118/8 and there were 16.3 overs, and Dwayne Bravo was the only hope. Once again, he didn’t let us down. Bravo hadn’t scored very much before the IPL. His last 50 in T20 came in September 2016 when he scored 55 off 54 deliveries against Pakistan. But his batting attack silenced the crowd of MI by smashing bowlers off the park. He scored 68 off only 30 balls before he was out.
- Nitish Rana Dismisses ABD and Kohli in consecutive balls
In tournament opener for KKR versus Royal Challengers Bangalore, it was Nitish Rana who bowled 15th over of RCB innings. Rana conceded a six to ABD in first ball. AB de Villiers skies the ball in next delivery but caught by Mitchell Johnson. Rana bowled fuller to crash middle-stump of Kohli. He was on a hat-trick after taking two deadliest wickets.
- Mayank Markande’s magic in first two matches for MI
If Mumbai Indians have not uncovered a gem like Mayank Markande, Mumbai Indians would have not even won a single match. The 20-year-old spinner is one of the best wicket-takers these days. He took 3 wickets in the first match, allowing only 23 runs. He took the key wicket of Dhoni and also dismissed Ambati Rayadu. Deepak Chahar was his third victim.
